Turf Grass Management

While it is not well known, turf grass management is becoming big business. In fact, nowadays, although there are many individuals who have been managing turf for decades, the new turf managers have all gone to school so that they can understand exactly what turf management is, and how to make the best playing field they can.

A turf grass management personnel is responsible for not just playing fields, but also a variety of golf courses, city parks systems, cemeteries, school lawns, and anywhere else that grass or turf is a part of the landscaping.

Turfgrass personnel will understand not just grass, but also soil science, irrigation practices, we and pest control, personnel and equipment management, and of course budgeting of resources as well.

A good turf management program will discuss non-irrigated turf maintenance for those lawns, parks, school grounds and golf courses that are in natural habitats. They'll also understand the greens maintenance and turf grass nutrition, understand iron chlorosis in turfgrass, understand nutrition and fertilization as well as take classes in turfgrass weed control, broadleaf control, as well other types of turfgrass pests and weeds.

The program will explain to them water management and how to use water sources wisely and is considered a four year degree at most universities that are offering continuing education in turfgrass management.

One of the growing fields in the world today, there is actually a demand for sports turf management and those with a degree are being well sought. Many different universities are offering degrees for turf grass maintenance including Penn State, Clemson University Stockbridge School at the University of Massachusetts, Auburn University, the University of Hawaii and others.

Making a playing field or park green and beautiful and keeping it that way with plenty of traffic is not necessarily an easy thing to do. Soil science as well is fertilization practices, weed control, and of course, irrigation has come a long way as far as science and technology goes. We need to conserve what resources we can, and a turf grass management personnel will understand water conservation. They'll also understand how fertilizers and pesticides can enter the water table, and so will be able to avoid this type of practice and yet still be able to keep the park or playing field green.

It's important that knowledge is used when it comes to using our vital resources, turf grass management programs are teaching young people how to conserve our resources and still keep green things growing. It's important that we use all of the technology at our disposal in order to keep green things green, and yet protect our water sources and public from pesticides and all turf grass management personnel have been well schooled in all of these practices.
